Origins and family
Esad Eso Sadiković was the only son of the well-known Prijedor partisan Hasib Sadiković and his wife Senija, also a partisan. As a seventeen-year-old pupil of the Gazi Husrev-beg madrasa in Sarajevo, Senija abandoned her schooling, returned to her native Prijedor and joined the partisans on Kozara because, according to the sources, she could not bear to watch the Ustasha arrest and kill her neighbours simply because they were Serbs. Hasib and Senija spent their working lives in the JNA, serving in various parts of the former Yugoslavia; he was a colonel and she a captain.
Eso was born in 1948 in Niš, but the family spent most of its life in Sarajevo. There he finished secondary school and the Faculty of Medicine, specialised, and played basketball for Sarajevo's "Bosna". During his military service he met Zorica Gagović, an economics student from Zaječar, and they soon married. Their daughter Alma and son Enis were born of the marriage.
Life in Prijedor
In 1982 Eso left Sarajevo and became head of the otorhinolaryngology department of the Medical Centre in Prijedor. His parents built a house in Prijedor to which they intended to return in retirement. After two years in Western Samoa as a United Nations expert, in 1988 Eso bought a house in the centre of Prijedor, in Skopska street, where he lived with his family for the next four years. His father Hasib died suddenly in 1991, after which his mother Senija returned to Sarajevo. According to one source, at the time of his killing Eso was also president of the Association of Otorhinolaryngologists of the SFRY.
The sources describe him as a beloved physician and a man of cheerful spirit, an erudite person inclined to satire and irony, with many friends in the town. Among his three closest friends he counted Dr. Mićo Kovačević. To prevent war in Prijedor, he founded the "League for Peace". While the Serb army was burning towns in Podrinje and killing Bosniaks, Eso, according to a source, believed that "this cannot happen in partisan Prijedor". To friends who asked why he had not left the town, he replied that he could have, but then he would no longer be "the Eso whom the people love", and that he was waiting to be taken to where his people had been taken.
Arrest and the Omarska camp
After the SDS seized power in Prijedor on 30 June 1992 and removed the legally elected head of the municipality, Muhamed Čehajić, the arrests of Bosniak and Croat intellectuals began. Dr. Sadiković was among the first arrested and was interned in the Omarska camp. Surviving detainees testify that he stitched the wounds of the injured with strands of his long hair, cared for the sick and exhausted, and encouraged them with his optimism.
His wife Zorica tried to save him: she went to Banja Luka to beg influential acquaintances for help, and also went to the Manjača camp, where word had spread that her husband had been transferred. His mother Senija and his brothers in Prijedor informed their friend General Milosav Bojić and his wife Cana of the arrest and asked for help. In a letter sent to Senija on 28 July 1993, the Bojić couple stated that "despite all our insistence, we still do not know where he is". When the letter arrived, Eso had long been dead.
